The Concerned Insured: Driving Over the Limit

So This Guy Walks Into a Bar…

He Says "Ow!"

It’s Saturday night and he is out with a couple of his buddies at the normal venue for the usual shenanigans.  They throw back a couple of beers, order some nachos, play some pool and talk about their wives and significant others.  They don’t usually go too crazy on Saturday nights.  They know that most of the college kids are going to come in, cause a raucous and make poor decisions, so the four of them like to stay and observe this in action.  The regulars are in their corner booth next to the bar mostly keeping to themselves, but have watchful eyes on the linebacker next to them that seems to have lost his ability to stand without wobbling.  And the bartenders are smiling and running around each other, waiting for last call.

Closing Time, One Last Call For Alcohol…

People are starting to clear out.  Crumbs, coins and receipts litter the floor; another fun project for the bartenders.  The four dudes are finishing their last gulps of beer and they start to talk about who is driving home.  One of them had a few shots of Jack Daniels so he was out of the equation.  The second challenged a Fraternity brother to a chugging contest (and lost) and a following rematch (and won), leaving him also less likely to be the one to drive.  So it was down to the last two.  None of them have a breathalyzer and there are no Police Officers around to give them a hand.  How are they going to solve this issue?

Well, There’s an App For That

An idea pops into the whiskey loving friend’s head.

“Hey!  My son told me about this app you can get for your phone that does a sobriety test for you to see how drunk you are.  He knows how I get so he put it on my phone for me.  Hold on, let me pull it up.”

Sure enough, he loads up BreathalEyes and reads the directions:

  Now That’s a Good Idea.

The app detects involuntary eye movements that Police Officers use to determine a driver’s intoxication during field sobriety tests.  It was a great idea by Clay Bradley and it can detect intoxication levels, and quite accurately.  It’s only $.99 on the App Store, and it could mean the difference of a safe drive home, or the loss of a license.  You should never drive drunk, so it is good to know if you’ve had too much before you get in the car, instead of finding out the hard way.

Moral?

They made it home just fine.  The designated driver had hogged most of the nachos and had a few less beers than the others, ranking a .05 in BreathalEyes.  If you abuse alcohol in public places and need a vehicle to get back home, make sure you’ve got some way of telling you if you should or should not get behind the wheel.  It can get expensive, so be smart!

The guy in the video probably shouldn’t be behind the wheel tonight…
